Peat Production at Nurme Turvas

Nurme Turvas a Dutch/Estonian undertaking, has grown to one of the largest peat producers in Estonia. We currently manages approximately 1300 hectares of peatlands in 2 locations and produce up to 1300000 m³ of premium peat moss a year. Our location provides us with a great logistical advantage to commercial ports in Estonia that provides us with vital link to international markets across Europe, Asia, North and South America, the Middle East, Africa, and Oceania.

Our production begins in one of Estonia’s most ecologically intact peatlands in Nurme bog. This region is known for its abundant, high-purity peat reserves, formed over centuries under natural conditions. The structure, composition, and cleanliness of the peat from this area make it ideal for horticultural and agricultural applications, offering excellent water retention, aeration, and nutrient stability.

Peat mining in Lavassaare bog began as early as the beginning of the 20th century. Consistent peat production in Nurme started in 1958. Since then, the site has evolved into a well-managed hub of industrial peat harvesting, supported by decades of technical development and environmental stewardship. With infrastructure built to optimize extraction, storage, and processing the Nurme production site stands today as a key pillar leading the Estonia’s peat industry and a trusted source of premium-quality peat moss for the global horticultural market.

Today, Nurme Turvas continues to build on this legacy by integrating sustainability and innovation into every aspect of its operations. Our harvesting fields are supported by an adjacent processing and packaging facility, allowing for minimal material handling time. This integrated setup enables us to maintain full product traceability and consistent quality across all products.

PEAT production Process

We use milled peat harvesting method that is efficient, sustainable, and designed to maximize production yield. Peat is milled, turned and harvested on the field, then transported to the on-site processing plant. Where it’s screened to different fractions, mixed with additives and packaged for shipping worldwide.

About Peat

Peat is an exceptional organic material that has become a cornerstone in professional horticulture due to its unique physical and chemical characteristics. Unlike any other substrate, peat offers a stable structure, low nutrient content, and high porosity, which together create the perfect foundation for custom blends and precision growing media.

Its inherent ability to retain moisture while allowing for adequate air exchange supports optimal root development across a wide variety of crops. In commercial greenhouses and nurseries, peat is preferred because its performance, consistency, cleanliness, and adaptability to diverse cultivation systems. As demand grows for reliable, high-quality substrates, peat continues to serve as the professional grower’s preferred choice.

Peat is not an instantly renewable material, it forms slowly over thousands of years through the accumulation and partial decomposition of bog vegetation in cold, waterlogged environments where oxygen levels are minimal. This natural process results in the gradual buildup of organic layers rich in fibrous matter and structural integrity, making peat fundamentally different from other soil additives.

These centuries old deposits are found in peat bogs, primarily in northern climates. The resulting material is biologically stable, free from harmful pathogens and weed seeds, and ideal for creating substrates. By understanding and respecting its geological origins, we Nurme Turvas transforms this natural legacy into a vital resource for modern, high-precision horticulture.

We work with horticulture growers worldwide and understand the unique challenges of professional cultivation. Our products are shipped to over 35 countries worldwide and certified to the highest international standards such as RHP and RPP. Let us help you find the right solution, tailored to your production needs.
